HIMSS16 is just around the corner and we’re ready to mark this conference down as the year of the patient. We’ve all heard the buzzwords around being patient-centric and population-centric and now is the time to focus on building those relationships with patients to ensure they stay engaged in their healthcare journeys.
Here are five topics we can’t wait to see discussed at HIMSS16:
Population-Centricity
If we want to successfully make the transition from fee to value-based care, we need to make patients the center of everything we do. It is imperative that we gain a complete understanding of our patient-populations’ health needs, access to care, healthcare preferences and more so we can create conditions for them to succeed.
Watch These Sessions for Population-Centricity in Action:
- Connected Health: A Case Study on Creating a Learning Health System
- Patient as Consumer: Product & Service Design Considerations for Optimizing Engagement & Creating a Positive Experience
- Pop health – It all starts with the patient and providers epicenter
Patient Engagement
Once we understand the needs, wants, preferences and desires of our patient-populations, we’ve got to engage them in the medical journey. This includes knowing how they prefer to communicate, what technology they are (or are not) integrating and uncovering their attitudes and beliefs toward healthcare.
Sessions We’re Excited to See on Patient Engagement:
- Using Mobile Apps to Drive Patient Engagement
- Communication and EHR Integration Improves Patient Experience
- Relationships are the Future of Healthcare
Value-Based Care
The switch to a value-based care model means that payers and providers will need to drastically change the way they do healthcare, but hopefully it will create a model that improves health and engages all participants in the system. The healthcare industry needs to become “customer obsessed” in order to provide the needed value in care.

Expanding Data Sources
We need to move beyond the EHR and clinical data to capture the full picture of patient-populations. Nontraditional data sources should be considered as offering a new perspective to how patients act, feel and think regarding their own healthcare choices. The voice of the consumer will be paramount in understanding how they make decisions. Data that comes from wearables, analytics and other data sources will be increasingly valuable as the healthcare world becomes patient-centric
Our Picks for Expanding Data Sources:
- Integrating Patient Data to Improve Medication Adherence
- Leveraging Location Services to Improve Patient Experiences
- Patient Engagement at Work
Using Data to Transform Behaviors
The impact of data in the healthcare setting is just as important as having and interpreting the data received. We need to be able to show changes as a result of shifting programs, creating stronger communication lines and involving patients more in the medical process. Measuring and seeing the changes as a result of using data will shape how we can respond to patient needs in the future.
